Sheffield International College
Sheffield International College (SIC) provides world-class university preparation courses that prepare international students for a degree at The University of Sheffield. In 2014 it was ranked number one in the UK for student experience.
Students who complete their course to the required level are guaranteed a place on their chosen postgraduate or undergraduate degree course at The University of Sheffield.
Sheffield International College runs courses with flexible start dates throughout the year.
The college provides pathway courses that help bridge the gap between the international qualifications of foreign students, and the qualifications that The University of Sheffield requires.
The four courses offered are:
- The Foundation Certificate in Business, Law and Social Sciences
- The Foundation Certificate in Science and Engineering
- The Graduate Diploma in Business, Law and Social Sciences
- The Graduate Diploma in Science and Engineering
Foundation Certificates prepare you for entry on to the first year of an undergraduate degree, and Graduate Diplomas prepare you for postgraduate study.

The University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield was first established as the Sheffield Medical School in 1828 and officially became a university after receiving its royal charter in 1905. It is a member of the prestigious “Russell Group” of Universities in the UK and is currently ranked 69th worldwide in the QS World University Rankings. It was named as the Times Higher Education University of the Year in 2011 and in 2014 was ranked 1st for student experience, social life, university facilities and student accommodation in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.
The University is split into five faculties: Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Medicine Dentistry and Health, Science and the Social Sciences. These five faculties comprise of over 50 departments offering a wide range of traditional academic degrees. It is also possible to combine a wide range of degree programmes together in a “dual honours” format, with many students studying two subjects in two separate faculties. In 2014/15 there were 26,309 registered students at the university.
The University’s Germanic Studies department is a well-established academic department within the University offering a wide range of teaching and research opportunities. The department is unique in the UK in that it offers Germanic Studies students the opportunity to study more than just German – students can also take courses in Dutch and Luxembourgish as a part of their degree programme, and Sheffield is the only university in the world that teaches Luxembourgish at an undergraduate level.
The University also has established ERASMUS links with over 100 universities worldwide, allowing students to travel abroad and study for a semester or full academic year at any of these universities. The university in return welcomes students from these universities to study in Sheffield, and there are currently students from 116 countries studying at the university. This exchange programme includes 17 universities in German-speaking countries. Students from the Germanic Studies department can spend their Year Abroad studying in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Sheffield Hallam University
Sheffield Hallam University is made up of 2 campuses – City Campus and Collegiate Campus. The two were originally training colleges, which joined together to become Sheffield Polytechnic in the early 1970’s. In 1992, Sheffield Polytechnic became Sheffield Hallam University and earned the right to award it’s own degrees. Today, Sheffield Hallam consists of four faculties spread across these two campuses: The Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering, and Sciences, the Faculty of Development and Society, the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, and the Sheffield Business School. The University currently has over 33,000 registered students.
Sheffield Hallam offers undergraduate language degrees combined with another degree subject: International Business, Teaching or Tourism, inclusive of a placement year. The university also offers postgraduate degrees in teaching english and modern languages, as well as international business and management degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
